In times like these–then faith perverted in the service of power, when lies masquerade as truth, when authoritarianism is on the rise, when fools and scoundrels occupy the seats of government—it’s helpful to remember what the poet Carl Sandburg wrote in his poem Upstream,
“The strong men keep coming on.
They go down, shot, hanged, sick, broken.
They live on fighting, singing, lucky as plungers,
The strong mothers pulling them on.
The strong mothers pulling them from a dark sea, a great prairie, a long mountain.”
This morning Rev. Gary Kowalski returns to Ajijic with a message of resilience and resistance sourced from the verse of the People’s Poet.
